Shen Yun Performing Arts brought 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture to life on stage at the Rosemont Theatre in Rosemont, Illinois, on April 26. Through classical dance, live music, and a digital backdrop, the company took audiences on a journey through history and heritage.

“Even if you're sitting in the seat, this is taking you thousands of miles away and even back in time. So that's enjoyable,” said Jamie Burghardt, a horticulture park director. “I was pleasantly surprised to see how the choreography and the videography kind of bounced back between each other, and how the performers would make it look like they're animated into the screen. I thought that was very effective when it comes to the storytelling.”

“There's not any words to express how beautiful it was. At one point I had tears going down my face. It was so moving. The dancing was just exquisite. And the music was just, it just went through you. You could feel it,” said Tara Keith, a company president.

“It's really breathtaking. It's more than I ever thought it was going to be, really exciting. It's really nice to see dancers of this caliber get up and be able to perform like this. It's really stunning,” said Jan Mackey, a realtor.

Shen Yun‘s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture and values, which have been under attack from the Chinese Communist Party since it took power in 1949. The regime has sought to destroy Chinese society’s deeply-rooted belief in the divine.

“That there is a higher power, and to be kind and courteous, and to love one another. I think that was the message,” Ms. Keith said.

“I've also been intrigued by the messages that have come through. I guess the one that spoke to me most was bringing to attention the oppression that's still occurring in modern China. I was not expecting that,” Mr. Burghardt said.

“It was enjoyable from beginning to end, every bit of it. It could have been longer, and it would have been just fine. It was really enjoyable. It's always impressive to see live performance. Especially when the music is live, every bit of it is live. It's happening here and now. You can't get that everywhere. And it was just amazing. Their talent is incredible,” said Mason Keith, a business owner.

“Their professionalism is incredible, they're well trained. They look like they enjoy what they do, and that's extremely important. It's been a pleasure,” said Mark Mackey, a business owner.

“We don't get to see this kind of culture very often, so it's wonderful to see. It's very interesting. It's very ornate, very technically difficult, and we're really enjoying it,” said Bill Nienburg, a company executive director.

Shen Yun will perform at the Civic Opera House in Chicago, Illinois, on May 3 and 4.
