“I must say that it is fantastic to see a culture that is skilled, musical, rhythmic, and acrobatic. It is absolutely fascinating to see, and I must say that it makes one happy,” said Araz Khan, an Odense City Council Member. “I think that during a time in the world where we need security and we need a base, it is extremely important that you hold on to those values and [traditional] culture. I think it is extremely important that you take care of your roots. And I think that the show here today proves that Chinese culture is strongly rooted despite the systems that are in place in China.”
“I think it’s important in the world that you hold on to yourself and your own traditions. You have to be open to others, but you shouldn’t forget who you are. That is important,” said Henrik Schrøder, a physician.
Ancient Chinese people believed their culture and values to be gifts from the Divine. These are reflected in Shen Yun’s performances through classical Chinese dance, music, and storytelling. Shen Yun is based in New York and cannot perform inside China, because their performance shines a light on the brutal persecution of faith by the Chinese Communist Party.
Mr. Khan said, “It absolutely captivates me, and there’s no doubt that it makes an impression, because it’s the deep core of China’s history too. We have to acknowledge that, as it is. The fact that they can’t perform these shows in China, which are banned, but are going to Europe and the West, pretty much says it all. I come from a country where there was that kind of regime, so when you’ve experienced oppression, you also understand the meaning and value of freedom.”
“I thought what was called the men’s dance was incredibly impressive. And it was really funny that from when I was a child, I remember the Monkey King. It was exciting to see it as a musical piece. It was fun to be able to recognize it. I think it was really nice,” said Mikkel Ammitzbøll, an Esbjerg City Council Member.
“It’s very exciting, especially this 3D [backdrop]. It’s very impressive. I’ve never seen it used like that before. And it becomes so alive, and the things behind it are alive, even though it’s set up like that,” said Birgit Schrøder, an accountant.
Mr. Schrøder said, “It’s a fantastically beautiful setup. The colors are really vibrant, and you have some extremely talented dancers. It’s exciting to watch.”
