A shooting at Holloman Air Force Base on Tuesday, March 17, left one person dead and another wounded, according to military officials.

The base is located near Alamogordo, New Mexico. The air force base was placed on lockdown at about 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday after reports of an active shooter near a base convenience store, officials with the 49th Wing said in a statement.

The injured individual is an active-duty service member assigned to Holloman Air Force Base and is in stable condition. The deceased was a civilian and military veteran who was previously stationed at Holloman, according to a March 18 update from the 49th Wing.

For privacy reasons, the name of the injured individual is being withheld. The name of the deceased is also being withheld pending notification of next of kin, it stated.

“This was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to our community,” stated the 49th Wing. “Based on the current investigation, this incident was domestic related, but the individuals were not married.”

The 49th Wing also asked individuals to avoid speculating on social media about the incident out of respect for the families involved.

“This incident is still under investigation and additional details will be provided as they become available,” the Air Force stated.

On March 17, emergency crews responded to the scene where the wounded individual was transported to a medical facility for treatment. Officials later confirmed the area was secure and the lockdown had been lifted.

"Emergency personnel are responding to the situation and there is no threat at this time," the statement said.

A Facebook post from the base indicated that the convenience store where the incident was reported would remain closed until further notice.

“Shoppette will be closed until further notice, thank you for your patience,” the post said on March 17.
Holloman Air Force Base spans about 93 square miles and is home to the 49th Wing, which supports national security missions and includes combat-ready airmen and guardians, according to the Air Force. "Holloman AFB supports about 21,000 Active Duty, Guard, Reserve, retirees, DoD civilians and their family members," states its website.

“The wing provides combat-ready Airmen and Guardians, trains F-16 Fighting Falcon pilots and MQ-9 Reaper pilots and sensor operators,” according to its website. "Additionally, the wing delivers Air Transportable Clinics and Basic Expeditionary Airfield Resources while providing support to more than 21,000 military and civilian personnel. The wing has a proud history of service in World War II, Korea, Southeast Asia, Southwest Asia and NATO-led Operation Allied Force.”

Mountain View Church, located near the base, posted: "In light of the shooting that happen[ed] yesterday on base, Mountain View Church wants to open our doors ... for a prayer vigil for the military community."
