A man wanted in connection with a deadly shooting and arson investigation in Canton, Ohio, has been arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service, according to authorities.
Darrell Washington, 46, was taken into custody Wednesday in New Philadelphia, Ohio, after investigators located him at a residence. Authorities said Washington attempted to run from law enforcement but was quickly apprehended.
The U.S. Marshals Service worked with a multi-agency task force to locate and arrest Washington. Several law-enforcement, fire and emergency medical agencies assisted in the operation.
Washington was wanted by the Canton Police Department on charges of aggravated murder and aggravated arson.
The case began Aug. 9, when firefighters responded to an apartment fire on Alan Page Drive in Canton. Once inside the building, emergency crews discovered two women dead.
The victims have been identified as 42-year-old Katina Spells of Canton and 31-year-old Kourtni Yeager of Massillon. Investigators said both women had suffered gunshot wounds and severe burns.
Spells and Canton had previously been reported missing by family.
Spells was a mother of three and her brother Richard told local media that she was helping a friend during the time she was killed.
“She was being nice and giving Kourtni a ride and they ended up at the wrong place at the wrong time,” Richard said.
Kathy Brown, Massillon’s mother, pushed for the suspects to be held accountable for their alleged actions.
“I want them to be caught and turn themselves in. Justice just needs to be served with the law,” Brown told local media.
A total of three suspects have been identified.
Prior to Washington's arrest, Eric Lamar, 43, turned himself in to authorities in connection with the case. Lamar has been charged with aggravated arson, tampering with evidence and obstructing justice.
Authorities said the third suspect remains at large.
Police are still searching for Melissa Terrell, 41, who is wanted on charges of aggravated arson, tampering with evidence and obstructing justice.
Investigators are continuing to work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the alleged roles of those involved.
The investigation remains ongoing, according to authorities. A motive in the case has not yet been established.
