Alphanso Talley, a 26-year-old Chicago man accused of fatally shooting a police officer and critically injuring another inside a hospital, was ordered to be held in custody Monday during his initial court appearance.

Talley, who resides in the 7600 block of South South Shore Drive, faces one count of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder, along with a range of additional felony charges, according to a Chicago Police Department press release dated April 27.

Those charges include aggravated kidnapping, multiple counts of aggravated battery, armed robbery, unlawful use and possession of a firearm by a felon, obstruction of justice, and possession of a fraudulent identification card. His next court hearing is scheduled for April 30.

During Monday’s hearing, prosecutors alleged Talley pulled a handgun from beneath a blanket while being treated at the hospital and opened fire on the officers who were guarding him. Authorities said Talley had been transported to the facility after claiming he ingested narcotics following his arrest in connection with an armed robbery earlier that morning.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said the wounded officer remains in critical condition and is “fighting for his life. These are the dangers of policing. This is a very, very, extremely dangerous profession,” he added during a press briefing.

The shooting occurred Saturday morning at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital, where Talley was in police custody for medical observation. At approximately 10:50 a.m., he opened fire, striking both officers.

One of the officers, identified as 38-year-old John Bartholomew, was pronounced dead. Bartholomew had served with the Chicago Police Department for 10 years and was assigned to the Albany Park (17th) District.

The second officer, a 57-year-old with 21 years of service, sustained severe injuries and remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Following the shooting, Talley fled the hospital, exiting through a window. He was apprehended a short time later by responding officers. Authorities said a firearm was recovered, and investigators later determined it matched shell casings found at the scene. Officials have indicated the weapon was not taken from the officers.

Hospital officials said the facility was immediately placed on lockdown in response to the incident. In a statement, Swedish Hospital said it has since reopened with controlled access through designated entrances, while maintaining a law enforcement presence tied to the ongoing investigation.

“Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic incident, particularly the officers involved and their families,” the hospital said, adding that no patients or staff were physically harmed.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
