A Texas man who was charged with allegedly administering an abortion-inducing drug to a pregnant woman without her knowledge or consent was released on bond this week, according to the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office.
Jon Rueben Gabriel Demeter, 25, of Spring, is charged with performance of an abortion and injury to a child, which are both first-degree felonies.
“She had 10 fingers, 10 toes, and an entire lifetime of possibilities ahead of her,” Sheriff Wesley Doolittle said at a press conference on May 20. “That future was stolen before it ever had a chance to begin.”
Demeter’s bond was set at $150,000 on each charge for a total bond amount of $300,000, according to Laura Smith, the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office communications chief.
"Mr. Demeter posted bond and was released on May 28, 2026," Smith told NTD in an email.
The charges stem from a call that law enforcement received on Feb. 21; Demeter was arrested on Feb. 23.
A first-degree felony in Texas carries a punishment of between five years and life in prison.
When reporters asked about the evidence against Demeter, authorities said abortion inducing drugs were found at a residence where a search warrant was served.
“That investigation revealed that John Rubin Demeter obtained abortion medication through the internet and had it shipped to his home,” Doolittle said. “He covertly crushed that medication, fixed it in a water bottle with a liquid IV packet and this was done with a specific intent to cause the death of a child.”
The mother named the child Presley Mae after she was stillborn at the hospital, according to Doolittle.
"Presley Mae's life was intentionally and tragically taken from her and we will not stand for it," Doolittle said at the press conference. "Presley Mae was stillborn at the hospital right at about 55 grams. She was developed about 14 weeks along."
Abortion is illegal in Texas at any stage of pregnancy and in nearly all circumstances.
