President Donald Trump has excluded two Democratic governors from an annual White House gathering because they aren't "worthy of being there."
Democratic Governors Wes Moore of Maryland and Jared Polis of Colorado are not invited to the annual National Governors' Association (NGA) meeting between the president and governors on Feb. 20, Trump said on social media.
The president issued the statement to debunk a false report allegedly made by Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt that the White House planned to limit invitations to Republican governors only.
The invitations to the annual business meeting were sent to all governors, except Moore and Polis, Trump stated.
Moore serves as NGA's vice chair.
Trump also took aim at Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, who serves as NGA chair, for allegedly fueling the narrative that only Republican governors were invited.
The president pointed out that he still invited Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Ill. Gov. JB Pritzker, despite the "terrible job" they are doing.
NTD reached out to NGA seeking a response to Trump's comments, but did not receive a response by publication.
Dr. Brandon Tatum, CEO of NGA, said in a previous statement that all governors were invited.
Traditionally, Tatum added, the White House has played a role in fostering collaboration at NGA’s annual meeting.
NTD also reached out to the offices of Polis and Moore seeking a response, but did not receive a response by publication.
Trump nonetheless expects most of the Democratic governors who were invited will not attend.
