President Donald Trump floated the idea on Wednesday that Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio would be an unbeatable GOP ticket in 2028.

Trump touted their talent when discussing his possible White House successor during an interview with Pod Force One that aired on Wednesday.
“I would think that JD and Marco as a team would be very hard to beat,” Trump told Miranda Devine. "It's interesting, human thing, the human equation. So I watch them together, they get along great.”

“They’re very talented,” Trump said. “And I think the two of them running together as a team would be very unbeatable.”

He also acknowledged that they would “have to agree to it,” while noting that there was still “a long time left” before the 2028 election.

Vance and Rubio have recently taken turns hosting the White House media briefings to answer pressing questions from journalists on a wide variety of topics. Both were praised for their smooth performances at the podium, with many supporters pointing out their ability to handle the media and strongly defend the policies of the Trump administration.

Vance has previously shrugged off rumors of a future presidential bid, maintaining that he was focused on his current job as vice president.

In an interview with the same podcast last year, Vance described the speculation over a 2028 campaign as “premature” but at the same time acknowledged he was open to the possibility.

“My attitude is the American people elected me to be vice president,” Vance said in the October 2025 interview. “I’m going to work as hard as I can to make the president successful over the next 3 years and 3 months, and if we get to a point where something else is in the offer, let’s handle it then.”

Rubio has also downplayed speculation over his political future.

He has emphasized his work as Secretary of State, stating he is not currently aiming for the presidency and focused on his duties in the Trump administration. Notably, Rubio has said that he would support Vance if he runs for president in 2028.

Speculation has emerged about former Vice President Kamala Harris’s possible run in 2028, with Democrats eyeing the race to replace Trump. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has widely been considered a strong contender in the race.

No one from either the Republican or Democratic side has formally entered the 2028 race for president.
