Vice President JD Vance appeared on The View on Tuesday and discussed the GOP's mandate to lower prices, defending the Trump administration’s affordability agenda.

Vance said that the administration's goal is to bring costs down following the end of the U.S.-Iran conflict. He emphasized that although gas prices remain elevated, they have begun to trend downward and progress has been made.

In May, U.S. consumer inflation increased at its fastest pace in three years as the Middle East conflict raised the price of gasoline and other energy products. The 4.2 percent annual increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) means that consumers are paying 4.2 percent higher on goods and services than they were one year earlier.

Addressing questions about inflation, Vance sought to clarify President Donald Trump’s recent comment that he "loves the inflation" and previous remarks calling the affordability crisis a “hoax."

“I’ve got to defend the president on the hoax point. What the president said is the idea that Republicans cause the affordability problem is a hoax, and I think that’s true,” Vance said. “If you go back to the Biden administration, inflation got up to 9 percent.”

Trump has repeatedly referred to the affordability crisis as a Democratic "hoax,” claiming that Democrats drove up the cost of living and that the term "affordability" is simply being used as a political narrative meant to link his administration to high prices.

During a December 2025 Cabinet meeting, Trump suggested the word "affordability" was being used to push a fake narrative, futher stating that his administration inherited massive inflation but has since brought prices down.

Trump doubled down on his claims during an economic address in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, where he told supporters that "affordability" is the Democrat party’s new "hoax" intended to stir up voter anger over the economy.

Meanwhile, Democrats have sought to make affordability a key focus ahead of the midterm elections.

“While billionaire Donald Trump may ‘love the inflation’ to grow his portfolio, hardworking families getting squeezed by high prices everywhere they look – from groceries to gas – do not,” Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Ill.), the chair of the New Democrat Coalition, wrote on X. “Every American should be able to afford life’s essentials without wondering how they will make ends meet. President Trump promised to lower costs, but all he does is make life harder for families nationwide while lining his own pockets and those of his allies,” Schneider added.

Vance, during his interview on The View, said Republicans were elected on the mandates of closing the border and affordability, adding that voters will decide in November's elections whether they believe that Republicans did a good job fulfilling those mandates.

Currently, Republicans hold narrow majorities in both the House and the Senate.
