The wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator (OC) Eric Bieniemy was shot at his Virginia home.
Mia Bieniemy was allegedly shot by the couple's son at their home in the town of Ashburn in Loudoun County. The son was taken into custody while she was taken to a hospital for treatment. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Monday that she was in stable condition.
The home is located less than 10 minutes from the Washington Commanders' headquarters in Ashburn; Bieniemy served as the Commanders' offensive coordinator in 2023.
The couple's 27-year-old son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, was arrested on the scene and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside of a dwelling. He was transported to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, where he was held without bond.
The investigation is ongoing.
Bieniemy was not present at Chiefs training camp on Monday, but head coach Andy Reid provided some updates.
"Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family," he said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them. I can't get into details on it, but things happen sometimes, and Eric will work through it. He's got a great support group here, as does his family, as needed, and then we'll just let time take care of it from there. But Mia is stable, which is a plus, and so is Eric Jr. And that's all important."
Reid said that offensive pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier, and run game coordinator Andy Heck will step up to run the offense in Bieniemy's absence.
Bieniemy played for Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999, Reid's first year as head coach and Bieniemy's final season as a player; he has known him and Mia since that time.
"She's a saint," he said of Mia Bieniemy. "We all know that, the people that know her. [She's] one of God's good blessings is right there now, really special person. But things happen, and you've just got to work through it. So that's where we're at right now. Time will have to be involved in this to help heal a little bit. But it'll all work out in the long run."
Bieniemy is on his second stint with the chiefs. He served as running backs coach from 2013 to 2017 before being promoted to OC in 2018. He became OC for the Commanders under HC Ron Rivera in 2023 but was not retained when Dan Quinn took over in 2024. He spent the 2024 season in the college ranks with the UCLA Bruins before becoming the running backs coach of the Chicago Bears in 2025. The Chiefs brought him back in 2026 after moving on from Matt Nagy.
