Thousands of pounds of bacon produced in Canada have been recalled after federal regulators said the products entered the United States without required import reinspection.

In a July 24 notice, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said the missed import reinspection was discovered during "routine inspection activities," prompting Maple Leaf Foods, Inc. to recall 12,036 pounds of its not ready-to-eat smoked bacon products.

The affected items were produced in June. They include 12-ounce packages of Royale Natural Applewood Smoked ALL NATURAL Uncured Bacon featuring sell-by dates of Sept. 1, 2026, and Sept. 7, 2026, as well as 12-ounce packages of TOP VALU Uncured Hardwood Smoked Bacon, with sell-by dates of Sept. 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7, 2026.

The recalled products also have the Canadian establishment number "EST. 1" displayed on the side of the package. Retailers and distributors can also identify the items by the health certificate number "2026-S732971612," which is printed on the master case boxes.

The agency classified the recall as "Class 1," the highest-level recall category, which is used when there is a reasonable probability that consuming a product will result in serious adverse health consequences or even death.

FSIS said there have been no confirmed reports of illness or injury in connection with the recall. However, the agency advised anyone with related concerns to contact a health care provider directly.

A spokesperson for Maple Leaf Foods, Inc. told NTD via email on Tuesday that the recall was "solely related to the import re-inspection requirement" and that there were no other concerns that prompted the recall, such as food safety issues.

As part of the recall process, FSIS said it conducts effectiveness checks to confirm that recalling firms have notified their customers of the issue and that the recalled products are no longer available to consumers.

The agency said it was concerned some customers may still have the recalled bacon stored in their refrigerators or freezers and urged anyone who bought the items not to eat them.

"These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase," officials said.
