New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has endorsed New York Gov. Kathy Hochul for reelection as she faces a primary battle with her second-in-command.
Mamdani announced the endorsement in an article in The Nation onFeb. 5, praising Hochul’s cooperation with him on progressive policies.
Hochul is running for reelection to a second four-year term in 2026 and has been seen as an establishment figure in the party.
Mamdani, who ran as a democratic socialist, acknowledged disagreements with Hochul, though he said the Democratic Party was a "big tent" where their differences could coexist.
"We have real differences, particularly when it comes to taxation of the wealthiest, at a moment defined by profound income inequality."
In his article, Mamdani alluded to President Donald Trump and his administration's actions against New York City.
"As we face threats from Washington, [Hochul] has defended our social safety net and protected funding for critical infrastructure projects," Mamdani wrote.
Hochul publicly thanked Mamdani on social media for his endorsement.
Since his election, Hochul and Mamdani have cooperated on several policy initiatives.
Hochul is currently running in the Democratic Primary against New York Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado, whom she appointed to office in 2022.
The primary is on June 23 and the general election on Nov. 3.
Hochul announced on Feb. 4 that she had chosen former New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams to be her running mate.
Adams ran against Mamdani in the 2025 mayoral primary election in New York City but later endorsed him.
Hochul had previously endorsed Mamdani's candidacy during the mayoral election.
Mamdani was running against former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Hochul's predecessor.
Hochul previously served as the lieutenant governor of New York and U.S. representative for New York's 26th Congressional District, which covers the cities of Buffalo and Niagara Falls.
