One person is dead and another was injured after a small plane went down in Utah Lake near Provo on Friday, according to a press release from the Utah County Sheriff's Office.
An adult male passenger died and the female pilot suffered non-life-threatening injuries when the small plane they were flying in crashed into Utah Lake shortly after departing Provo Airport.
First responders received word at 4 p.m. on Aug. 7 of reports of a plane down in the lake near Utah Lake State Park. The plane had just taken off from Provo Airport when it went down, and two people were aboard at the time.
The male passenger died as a result of the crash, while the female pilot was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The sheriff's office said the pilot managed to bring the aircraft down in shallower water, a factor officials credited with helping rescue and recovery crews reach the scene more quickly.
Officials have not released the names of either person involved in the crash. "We would like to offer our condolences to the family of the deceased," the sheriff's office said in its statement.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate the circumstances that led to the crash. The Utah State Medical Examiner's Office has also been notified and is conducting a separate investigation.
The north side of Utah Lake State Park was closed following the crash and was expected to remain shut on Friday evening. The wrecked aircraft will be left in place at the crash site at least overnight, and the sheriff's office asked the public to stay away from the area.
As with the other recent crashes, the cause of the Utah Lake incident has not yet been determined, and officials say the NTSB's investigation will aim to establish what led to the aircraft going down.
