A 15-year-old boy died earlier this week after he was struck by a falling tree while hiking at a summer camp in Nashville, Tennessee, authorities said.
Officials said two counselors were guiding Callihan and other campers on a hike through the woods when they encountered a fallen tree that was leaning against another tree above the trail.
"A counselor reported warning the campers not to touch the tree as they walked under it," authorities said.
However, police said detectives learned that as Callihan and a friend passed beneath the tree, the friend "touched it in a pull-up motion" causing it to fall on the 15-year-old.
The counselors and other campers managed to lift the tree off the teen before camp staff provided emergency medical care. He was subsequently transported by ambulance to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, roughly 15 miles away, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
No other injuries were reported in connection with the incident. Police said Callihan's death has been classified as accidental and did not indicate whether his friend would face any charges. Authorities did not release the other camper's identity, but multiple media outlets reported that the teen was 14 years old.
NTD reached out to the Antioch camp's owner and operator, YMCA of Middle Tennessee, for comment, but a response was not received by publication time.
"There are no words to adequately express the depths of our grief for this tragic loss," YMCA of Middle Tennessee told the outlet. "At this time, we ask that you keep the victim's family, other campers and the staff and emergency personnel who responded in your thoughts and prayers."
The organization noted that a team was at Camp Widjiwagan to support campers and staff who were involved in Monday's incident and subsequent emergency response efforts.
"Our focus at this time is caring for those impacted by the incident," the nonprofit added.
