An 18-year-old suspect is in custody after a shooting at a Northern California library early Monday evening left two adults dead and a child injured, authorities said.
Authorities confirmed that two adults were killed in the shooting. One juvenile sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital. The victims' identities have not yet been released pending the notification of next of kin.
Sayer, a resident of Chico, was booked into the Butte County Jail on two counts of murder. Police said detectives have determined that he acted alone and that there was no indication that he had any previous connection to any of the victims prior to the shooting.
Officials have not announced an official motive for the attack, but said Sayer's alleged actions appeared to be driven by a desire to carry out "a Columbine High School massacre type of shooting."
The roadways around the library were blocked off for several hours following the shooting. In a Facebook post Monday, officials urged residents to avoid the area as investigators worked the scene, adding that all libraries throughout the county would remain closed on Tuesday.
The Chico Police Department said officials are actively conducting interviews and collecting evidence related to the case. Multiple local, state, and federal partner agencies are also assisting with the investigation, including the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, the California Highway Patrol, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Anyone with information about the incident has been asked to contact the Chico Police Detective Bureau directly at (530) 897-5820.
