Five U.S. tourists visiting Nassau found themselves behind bars Monday after a fight at a cruise ship terminal escalated into a violent confrontation inside a Bahamian police station—leaving four officers injured, one seriously.

The incident began on the afternoon of June 8, when Tourism Police Officers responded to reports of a physical altercation among cruise ship passengers at the Nassau Cruise Port. By shortly after 4:45 p.m., officers had taken five American nationals into custody, three women and two men, police said in a press release.

What happened next, police said, was far worse than the original brawl.

When officers arrived at the station and began the process of searching the five suspects, a violent struggle broke out between the detainees and police. One of the female suspects allegedly hurled a chair through a glass door facing the southern side of the station, shattering it. A male suspect then allegedly kicked out the remaining shards of glass and tried to bolt—only to be quickly tackled and restrained by officers. Additional police units had to be called in to help bring the situation under control.

Four officers were injured in the assault. Two were struck on the body, and a third received a laceration to the mouth. The most serious injury was to a fourth officer, who suffered a major wound to his left shoulder and was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment. His condition was unknown as of the time of the press release.

The five suspects also received minor injuries during the original altercation at the cruise port and were evaluated and treated by Emergency Medical Services personnel on scene.

Another complicating factor emerged when the cruise ship's scheduled departure left the complainants with no time to provide official statements to police. Despite that setback, all five suspects remained in custody as investigators pressed forward.

The suspects face a slate of charges, including assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, malicious damage, fighting in a public place, and disorderly behavior in a police station. The investigation is ongoing.

Nassau's cruise port is one of the busiest in the Caribbean, drawing millions of visitors annually. Monday's episode began as one of countless minor disputes that security personnel manage at ports across the region—but the chain of events that followed was anything but routine.

All five suspects remain in custody pending the outcome of the investigation.

Earlier last month, an 88-year-old American woman died after her motorized scooter veered off a pier at Celebration Key in Grand Bahama while the Carnival Celebration was in port. Carnival crew members pulled her from the water, but she could not be revived despite resuscitation attempts. Days later, an 83-year-old American man died while snorkeling near Great Stirrup Cay, a private island operated by Norwegian Cruise Line.
