Authorities in Washington rescued dozens of cats from a boat abandoned off the coast of Tacoma, following a weeklong operation to bring the animals safely to shore, authorities said.
"What our officers found inside was unexpected: more than 30 cats and kittens living in unsafe conditions," officials said.
After obtaining a warrant, officers worked with local animal control and the department's forensics unit to remove the animals, ultimately rescuing 60 cats and kittens from the boat.
Police said many of the felines "were frightened and malnourished, requiring patience, care, and a tremendous amount of teamwork" from all personnel involved.
"We’re proud of our Marine Services officers, Animal Control officers, and Forensic Technicians for their compassion and dedication—not only to the people they serve, but to every member of our community who needs a helping hand," officials shared.
"Our work isn’t quite finished," officials said. "The department will continue operating under the authority of the search warrant and will make additional trips to the vessel this week to ensure no cats are left behind."
Hieb told the outlet that the colony grew from a single cat he was given during the COVID-19 pandemic, which went on to have a litter of kittens. He said he could barely afford necessities, including cat food, and was unable to pay to have the cats spayed and neutered.
"It is what it is—it’s all my fault," he said.
The nonprofit organization said the cats were being closely monitored and that more than 20 of them had already placed in foster homes.
