A 9-year-old boy died earlier this week after he was pulled unresponsive from a pool at a summer camp in Virginia.

The boy—identified by local media as King Overton—was a participant at the SwimRVA-North facility in Chamberlayne, just outside of Richmond, when the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Monday, the organization confirmed in a statement.

"Pool staff immediately began CPR and continued lifesaving efforts until paramedics and County Fire Department personnel arrived and assumed care," SwimRVA said. "The child was transported to the hospital, where he passed away."

The boy's mother, LaTaisha Johnson, told WRIC ABC 8News that it had been her son's first day of summer camp. She recalled the last conversation she had with him before dropping him off at the facility that morning.

"My baby turned around and said, 'Okay mom, love you.' I said, 'I love you the most. Have a good day.'" she told the station. "I turned around, I walked out, and that was the last time I seen my son alive."

Speaking with WRIC, Johnson noted that her son was attending the summer camp in order to learn how to swim. She added that she has not received any communication from SwimRVA-North in the wake of the incident.

"I don’t know anything," she said. "I just know they found my baby at the bottom of a pool."

SwimRVA said in its online statement that it is cooperating fully with the authorities as they investigate the circumstances surrounding King's death.

"Our hearts are with the child's family and loved ones during this loss," the organization said. "We extend our deepest condolences and are keeping them and all those affected by this tragedy in our thoughts."

Authorities have not yet released the official cause and manner of King's death. SwimRVA has also not shared any additional details about the circumstances surrounding the child being pulled unresponsive from the pool. NTD reached out for more information, but a response was not received by publication time.

SwimRVA is a nonprofit that promotes swimming and water safety education. On its website, the organization said it is "committed to transforming lives through aquatics and building a Drownproof Richmond," adding that its initiative "has always been at the heart of [the] nonprofit mission to bring aquatic access and education to everyone in the region."
A GoFundMe page created to help cover funeral expenses for King has raised more than $35,000 as of Friday afternoon.
