Legendary broadcaster Al Michaels made a joke about President Donald Trump’s renaming of Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”
"That is Lake Erie—we think it is still called Lake Erie—on the right," Michaels said. "We're not quite sure at this point. But we'll be by Lake something like Ontario or whatever it's going to be called by the time we get to Buffalo. Anyway, you know what I'm talking about. Some of you do."
"Some of us do," color analyst Kirk Herbstreit said, to a laugh from Michaels.
"Read the news," Michaels replied.
The order directs the Department of the Interior to update the federal government’s Geographic Names Information System to reflect the new name.
Trump’s name change comes after the United States recently imposed 50 percent tariffs on billions of dollars of Canadian goods.
Trump told reporters that Canada charges U.S. farmers “400 percent tariffs” for far too long, adding that Canadian officials have treated the United States very poorly.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged retaliatory measures after trade negotiations between the two longtime allies broke down.
Canada later announced “dollar-for-dollar” retaliation, imposing tariffs of 15, 25, or 50 percent effective Sept. 8.
“Canada's counter tariffs will apply to products covering $27.6 billion in imports from the U.S. and will focus on sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, that are most impacted by U.S. tariffs,” the government said.
Lake Ontario, an international body of water, is one of North America's five Great Lakes and is shared by the United States and Canada, bordering New York and the Canadian province of Ontario.
Google Maps has changed the name of "Lake Ontario" to "Lake America" for U.S. users to reflect Trump's executive order renaming the lake.
Canadian officials have indicated that the lake will continue to be known as Lake Ontario in Canada.
Michaels and Herbstreit will call the broadcast for a fifth season together beginning on Sept. 17, when the Detroit Lions travel to Buffalo (along the shores of the disputed Great Lake) for a matchup with the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium.
