President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday directing the U.S. government to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”
The change would take effect immediately, Trump said. The president signed an executive order last year to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
“We’re going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario effective immediately to Lake America,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
The order directs the Department of the Interior to update the federal government’s Geographic Names Information System to reflect the new name.
Lake Ontario, an international body of water, is one of North America’s five Great Lakes and is shared by the United States and Canada, bordering New York state and the Canadian province of Ontario.
