The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall of cat and dog food from two popular pet companies sold in seven states.

Concerns about the potential presence of Salmonella led Foodynamics of Wales, Wisconsin, to voluntarily recall specific lots of Raw Dog Barkery, BellePepper Cats, Kanu Pets, and What’s In the Bowl brand freeze-dried pet treats, according to an FDA alert.

The recalled Foodynamics products were shipped from Wisconsin via UPS to retailers in Wisconsin, New York, and Florida.

“Foodynamics successfully traced 100% of the product distribution and has contacted all direct customers,” the FDA said. “The recall is the result of FDA sampling, which revealed the presence of Salmonella. Foodynamics has ceased the production and distribution of the product while it works with the FDA to continue its investigation into what caused the problem.”

The recall applies to Raw Dog Barkery Treats for Cats and Dogs Freeze Dried Whole Chicken Hearts, What’s In the Bowl Whole Chicken Hearts, BellePepper Cats Freeze Dried Chicken Heart Slices, and Freeze Dried Sample Treats, as well as Kanu Pets Freeze Dried Chicken Heart Raw Treats.

Raw Bistro Pet Fare of Cannon Falls, Minnesota, is also voluntarily recalling 3-pound bags and 18-pound cases of frozen beef dog food for the same reason.

The affected lots of Raw Bistro Dog Fare Grass-Fed Beef Entrée were distributed direct to consumer and to select distributors in sealed packaging between Sept. 1 and 17 in California, Colorado, Illinois, and Minnesota.

The FDA said in an advisory that the potential for contamination of Raw Bistro dog food was identified after an FDA-collected sample from a distributor tested positive for Salmonella; however, to date, no illness of pets or humans related to the food has been reported.

“Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after contacting the products or any surfaces exposed to the products,” the FDA added.

Pet owners are urged to contact a veterinarian if their cat or dog has consumed the recalled product and exhibits Salmonella infection symptoms, such as lethargy, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, fever, or abdominal pain.

Instructions offered by the FDA include disposing of the pet food in a way that is not accessible to children, pets, or wildlife, by not reselling, feeding, or donating the recalled products to other animals, and by washing and sanitizing a pet’s food bowls, water cups, and storage containers.
