Viewers tuning into the women’s international soccer match between England and Ghana on Tuesday were met with a frightening scene when popular British television presenter Laura Woods collapsed live on air.
She fainted during pre-game coverage at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton. Footage from the broadcast showed Woods suddenly stumble forward while standing at the side of the field. As she fell, she was caught by her co-presenters, Ian Wright and Anita Asante, who prevented her from hitting the ground.
British broadcaster ITV4 moved swiftly to handle the emergency, as the network cut immediately to a commercial break. When the program returned, stand-in presenter Katie Shanahan had taken Woods' place to lead the coverage.
Shanahan addressed the audience’s concerns directly. "As you have probably noticed we don’t have the wonderful Laura Woods because she’s just been taken ill," Shanahan said.
She assured viewers that the situation was under control, saying, "But she’s in very good hands so I’m stepping in at late notice." Later in the show, Shanahan provided another update, adding, "We want to reassure you all she is doing OK."

Following the health scare, Woods turned to social media to explain what happened and thank the medical team that helped her. In an Instagram story posted to her account @laurawoodsy, she described the event as "a bit weird" and admitted she felt self-conscious about the public nature of the incident.
"Sorry to worry everyone, I’m OK, the wonderful paramedics at Saints have said it’s probably a virus, just need a bit of rest & hydration," Woods wrote on her Instagram story, which has since expired. She added, "I'm really embarrassed that happened on tv, but a big thank you to my colleagues at ITV who have really looked after me tonight."
She also thanked her co-hosts for their quick reflexes. "And to Wrighty & Neets for catching me and sorry again," she wrote.
Woods is a highly accomplished figure in sports broadcasting. According to her Instagram page, where she has amassed 750,000 followers, she was named the "Broadcast Sports Presenter of the Year" for 2024 and is a two-time winner of the SJA Sports Presenter of the Year award. Her bio notes that she works with major sports entities including @itvfootball, @tntsports, and @adidas. She is a regular face on coverage for the men's Champions League.
In a September 2024 Instagram post celebrating the engagement, Woods shared her joy. "And just like that… You make me happy @adamcollard," she wrote. She tagged the @carbisbayestate, calling it "the place we fell in love and now the place we got engaged," adding, "you made it so special. What a summer."
