Frozen cheese bread sold at Costco and a slew of other major retailers nationwide has been recalled over concerns that an ingredient may be contaminated with salmonella.

Champion Foods LLC said in a May 30 notice sent to members of the wholesale club that it had voluntarily pulled select batches of its Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread following a prior recall involving milk powder produced by California Dairies, Inc., which was used in a seasoning blend for the product's five-cheese sauce.

The company urged Costco members not to consume, serve, or distribute the ready-to-bake cheese bread, noting that the product can be returned for a full refund.

The recalled cheese bread was also distributed by more than a dozen other major retailers and distributors, including Target, Walmart, Publix, Kroger, Giant Landover, Grocery Outlet, Jewel, Schnucks, C&S, Bozzuto’s, Brookshire Grocery, Meijer, Food City, KeHe, Lipari, Merchants Dis Hickory, PDI/Hy-Vee, River Valley, SpartanNash, Supervalu, and UNFI.

The affected batches include single packs featuring a UPC of 8 70375 00511 1 with sell-by dates ranging from Feb. 4, 2027, to Apr. 21, 2027. Two-packs of Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread with a UPC of 8 70375 00509 8 and sell-by dates between Feb. 3, 2027, and Mar. 25, 2027, are also included in the recall.

Salmonella is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract and is usually spread through contaminated water or foods, such as raw meat or unpasteurized dairy products.

Salmonella infections are usually not life-threatening, but can cause serious complications for infants, older adults, or those with a weakened immune system. Symptoms often include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting.

Champion Foods said in a separate press release that no reports of illness or injury had been received in connection with the recalled products.

"Routine testing conducted by the seasonings blend manufacturer prior to use in the production of the 5 Cheese Bread showed that the seasonings batches tested negative for Salmonella," the company said. "However, we are taking action out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our customers."

California Dairies, Inc. recalled its bulk powdered milk ingredients in April, including more than 2.5 million pounds of low heat non-fat dried milk powder and nearly 20,000 pounds of buttermilk powder.
A number of companies subsequently issued recalls for their products containing the affected ingredients, including the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company, which pulled select powdered beverage mixes, and Blackstone, which recalled certain lots of its parmesan ranch seasoning.

Utz Quality Foods, LLC also recalled limited varieties of its Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips over salmonella concerns.
