A child has died and two other people were injured after a large tree fell onto a playground at an elementary school in Massachusetts.
“It is with great sadness that we share that the student who was seriously injured yesterday afternoon during the incident on the Winthrop School playground has died,” the statement reads.
The victim’s identity has not been publicly released.
School officials said counseling staff and additional administrators were deployed to assist students and staff following the tragedy. The statement added that the other injured child and adult had been discharged from area hospitals.
“There are no words that can truly ease the pain of such a heartbreaking loss,” the department wrote. Fire officials also thanked responding agencies, including police, EMS personnel, and first responders who assisted at the scene.
“We also want to recognize the dedicated efforts of all responding agencies—fire, police, EMS, and first responders—who worked tirelessly and with great compassion during this difficult incident. These situations are never easy, and their professionalism and care do not go unnoticed,” the message continues.
Community members placed flowers, notes, and memorial items near the playground.
Witnesses told the outlet that strong winds had moved through the area on May 4 before the collapse.“It was gusty. It was definitely gusty today and it continues to be,” neighbor Nancy Clover told WCVB. “I’m just sad for this family and the child.”
