A child has died and two other people were injured after a large tree fell onto a playground at an elementary school in Massachusetts.

The incident occurred on May 4 at Winthrop Elementary School in Melrose, where students and staff were outside on the playground when the tree collapsed, according to local officials and reporting from WCVB-TV.
Two students and one adult were injured in the accident. In a statement released on May 5, Superintendent Cari Berman and Mayor Jennifer Grigoraitis confirmed that the student who had been critically injured later died.

“It is with great sadness that we share that the student who was seriously injured yesterday afternoon during the incident on the Winthrop School playground has died,” the statement reads.

The victim’s identity has not been publicly released.

School officials said counseling staff and additional administrators were deployed to assist students and staff following the tragedy. The statement added that the other injured child and adult had been discharged from area hospitals.

“There are no words to convey such a profound loss. Our hearts are and will remain with the student’s family, friends, and classmates, who are navigating this unimaginable tragedy,” Berman and Grigoraitis said in a following statement.
The Melrose Fire Department also acknowledged the loss in a public message on May 5, calling the incident a “heartbreaking loss” for the community.

“There are no words that can truly ease the pain of such a heartbreaking loss,” the department wrote. Fire officials also thanked responding agencies, including police, EMS personnel, and first responders who assisted at the scene.

“We also want to recognize the dedicated efforts of all responding agencies—fire, police, EMS, and first responders—who worked tirelessly and with great compassion during this difficult incident. These situations are never easy, and their professionalism and care do not go unnoticed,” the message continues.

Video footage captured by WCVB’s Sky5 helicopter showed the large tree sprawled across a jungle gym on the school playground. The tree appeared to have fallen from behind a fence bordering the property, crushing part of the fence as it came down.

Community members placed flowers, notes, and memorial items near the playground.

Witnesses told the outlet that strong winds had moved through the area on May 4 before the collapse.

“It was gusty. It was definitely gusty today and it continues to be,” neighbor Nancy Clover told WCVB. “I’m just sad for this family and the child.”
