Certain Social Security recipients can expect an early delivery of August funds.
That’s because Aug. 1 falls on a Saturday and the SSA cannot issue payments on the weekend.
Standard banks and the Federal Reserve are typically closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
The calendar shows the month of July’s payment was deposited on July 1, which is standard, and the calendar also shows a payment on July 31.
As a result, SSI recipients will not receive a payment in August.
The early payment creates a 32-day gap between deposits that financial experts recommend beneficiaries be mindful of so that their July 31 funds cover all of August's regular expenses.
Two more double payments will occur in October and December this year because Nov. 1 falls on a Sunday and Jan. 1, 2027, falls on New Year’s Day, a federal holiday.
The SSA estimates that more than 71 million Americans receive Social Security benefits and 7.3 million receive SSI payments.
Social Security payments total about $137.3 billion each month, with an average payment of $1,932.80, compared to about $5.76 billion that’s paid out monthly in SSI benefits, where the average monthly payment is $738.22.
SSI is a needs-based safety net program whose recipients include older adults, blind individuals, or people with disabilities who have exceptionally limited income and resources.
Disbursements for other SSA programs, like the earned income insurance program known as Social Security, are not anchored to the first of every month, which is why SSI recipients are the only SSA beneficiaries receiving two payments in July.
Americans who receive both Social Security and SSI receive their SSI on the 1st and their regular benefits on the 3rd.
Federal law mandates that SSI payments must arrive by the first of the month and most disbursements occur through electronic fund transfers.
The automatic banking adjustment is designed to ensure that vulnerable Americans don't experience a delay in paying their bills.
If a recipient notices that their expected early payment has not arrived by the final Friday business day of July, the SSA advises contacting local field offices immediately to resolve processing issues before August begins.
Beneficiaries can also log into their personal online "my Social Security" accounts to verify direct deposit routing numbers or track payment history instantly. Alternatively, individuals may call the agency's national toll-free customer service helpline at 1-800-772-1213. Representatives are available on weekdays to assist with any missing or delayed federal disbursements.
