A young child was killed and a woman was critically injured after an officer-involved shooting during a shoplifting call in northern Mississippi earlier this week, authorities said.
"Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver drove in the direction of the officers, almost striking one," the bureau said. "An officer then discharged their weapon and the vehicle fled the scene."
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said the vehicle's occupants later arrived at a local hospital, where the child was pronounced dead. One of the adults also sustained critical injuries. WREG identified the injured woman as the mother's friend. However, officials have not yet released the identities of the two women.
The Tate County Sheriff’s Office told NTD via email on Tuesday that its deputies were already at the Walmart investigating an unrelated incident when their assistance was requested for the shoplifting call.
"Please keep the family of the deceased in your thoughts and prayers," the sheriff's office added.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the incident and will share its findings with the Attorney General’s Office for review.
NTD reached out to the Senatobia Police Department for additional information, but a response was not received by publication time. However, the department said in its statement that local police officials are "committed to full transparency."
"As the investigation progresses and facts are verified, we will share as much information as possible," Senatobia police added.
"The safety of our associates and customers is a top priority," the statement reads. "We’re working with law enforcement as they continue investigating."
