Japan has lodged a complaint against China over viral social media videos that it says misrepresent a recent high-level diplomatic meeting amid an escalating row between the two nations, Japanese government spokesperson Minoru Kihara said on Wednesday.

Chinese foreign ministry official Liu Jinsong held a meeting in Beijing with his Japanese counterpart Masaaki Kanai on Tuesday to tame a diplomatic dispute that was sparked by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's remarks about Taiwan.

A clip that has gone viral on Chinese social media appeared to show Liu speaking to Kanai with his hands in his pockets, with Kanai appearing to look deferential and apologetic with his head bowed.
