Dog Food Recalled Across US Due to Choking Risk

The FDA said cans of Fromm Turkey Pâté Wet dog food and Fromm Diner Classics Milo's Meatloaf Pâté Wet dog food were sold at neighborhood pet stores and online outlets.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall of 5,825 cases of canned dog food sold in the United States and Canada.

Concerns about the potential presence of metal contamination led Fromm Family Foods of Mequon, Wisconsin, to voluntarily recall 3,852 cases of 12.2-ounce Fromm Turkey Pâté Wet canned dog food and 1,973 cases of 12.5-ounce Fromm Diner Classics Milo's Meatloaf Pâté Wet canned dog food, according to an Aug. 21 FDA advisory.

“The recall was initiated after receiving complaints of metal contamination,” Fromm Family Foods company officials said in the FDA alert. “We have identified the error, and in addition to our existing safety processes, we have put corrective actions in place to prevent this from happening again.”

The lot codes in question are EP2A3306 551006 and EP2A3306 551029.

Both varieties were sold at neighborhood pet stores and online outlets. As of Aug. 24, there have been no reports of illness or injury related to the recalled products and there are no other Fromm products affected by the recall. The FDA warned that metal of any size, especially sharp pieces, can lead to serious health issues in dogs, including cuts in the mouth and gastrointestinal tract.

In addition, consuming metal can lead to gastrointestinal upset, partial blockage, and a risk of intestinal obstruction.

“Dogs ingesting metal may exhibit symptoms such as choking, vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, or stomach discomfort,” the FDA said.

The FDA urged consumers whose dogs may have consumed any of the recalled food and are exhibiting such symptoms to contact their veterinarian.

“We have identified the error, and in addition to our existing safety processes, we have put corrective actions in place to prevent this from happening again,” Fromm Family Foods company management said.

Last month, Mars Petcare announced the voluntary recall of PEDIGREE High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor for dogs in 13.2-ounce cans.

The market withdrawal was based on the discovery that the product was fraudulently diverted and placed on shelves and then sold into the U.S. marketplace despite having been earmarked for destruction, according to an FDA alert.

The recalled products did not meet Mars and PEDIGREE's stringent safety and quality standards, according to a statement by Pedigree.

The lot codes in question include 613C3KKCFC and 613C1KKCFC.

“We are committed to protecting pets and helping consumers identify and remove the affected products from use. We have received no related reports of pet illness or injury to date," Mars Petcare company officials added.
