Elle Fanning, a member of this year’s Cannes Film Festival jury, fainted Monday night at the Chopard Trophee dinner party because her dress was “too tight,” she says.
“Oops, had a fainting spell tonight in my 1950’s Prada prom dress but it’s all good!” she captioned a photo on Instagram, adding the hashtags #dresstootight and #timeofthemonth.
In the Instagram post, Fanning is smiling and giving the camera a thumbs up, seemingly unperturbed by that night’s events.
According to eyewitnesses, the fainting spell happened so fast that most people hadn’t even noticed anything had happened.
One eyewitness saw the whole thing, but told E! online that Fanning “quickly recovered before leaving.”
“Most people in the room didn’t even notice until after there was a brief pause, during which word quickly spread through the venue about what happened,” the eyewitness added.
Fanning was sitting at a table next to her sister, Dakota Fanning, according to Variety. When the incident occurred, Dakota Fanning was quick to help her younger sibling. Colin Firth, known for portraying Mr. Darcy in “Pride and Prejudice,” also reportedly offered his assistance to the young actress as he was seated nearby, according to the publication.
According to Variety, Fanning fainted just as festival director Thierry Fremaux was introducing actor Francois Civil onstage.
Soon after, security escorted both Fannings from the premises.
Marion Cotillard, known for her roles in “Inception” and “The Dark Knight Rises,” reportedly “placed a hand over her heart” as Fanning was escorted out, according to the publication.
At 21 years old, Fanning is the youngest member to ever be on the nine-person jury at the Cannes Film Festival that will decide who goes home with the prestigious Palme d’Or.
She has appeared in such films as “Teen Spirit” (2018), “Maleficent” (2014), and “Super 8” (2011).
