China Threatens US With South China Sea Actions; Defense Secretary Says US Prepared to Defend

In the South China Sea, the Chinese military sent a threat to the United States by firing four medium-range ballistic missiles into the water. This happened as the Trump administration passed sanctions on 24 Chinese companies for their role in helping the regime build militarized artificial islands in the region.

US commander of the Navy fleet in the area, Vice Adm. Scott Conn, responded saying that the US Navy will continue to operate there, and that “Our naval forces are ready to respond to any threat to our allies or partners throughout the region.”

Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Mark Esper published an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal, stating that the Pentagon is prepared for threats from the Chinese military, and that the United States and its allies are “ready to defend every front.”
