The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners approved on Tuesday a resolution in collaboration with the City of Hialeah to rename Palm Avenue as "President Donald J. Trump Avenue”, during their regular meeting.
The name change recognizes Trump's presidency and his accomplishments during his first term in office, as well as his historic reelection to a non-consecutive second term in November 2024, according to the resolution passed on Nov. 27 by the City of Hialeah.
The resolution highlights several achievements attributed to Trump during his tenure as the 45th President of the United States from 2017 to 2021.
Such include the signing of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which is described as one of the largest tax reforms in American history, and economic policies that reportedly led to record-low unemployment rates, reaching 3.5 percent in early 2020.
It also recognizes Trump's efforts in bolstering the U.S. military and establishing the United States Space Force in 2019. Additionally, his role in brokering the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations, is acknowledged as a significant achievement.
It also notices Trump's actions aimed at promoting democracy globally, including sanctions against Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. These measures were intended to weaken Cuba's communist regime and support opposition leader Juan Guaidó in Venezuela.
"This renaming honors President Trump’s steadfast commitment to putting America first and prioritizing the needs of the American people," Bovo said in his post.
“Today, we ratified the City of Hialeah’s initiative to honor President Trump’s legacy of championing freedom and opportunity by co-designating Palm Avenue—a vital artery in our community—as ‘President Donald J. Trump Avenue’,” his post reads.
The Miami-Dade Board waived a procedural rule requiring background research on individuals subject to co-designations due to Trump's status as a well-known public figure. The renaming affects Palm Avenue within Hialeah, which spans parts of County Commission Districts 6 and 13.
The resolution directs various county departments and agencies to update signage reflecting the new street name. This includes coordination with the United States Postal Service and local traffic management divisions.
The initiative was supported by Commissioners JC Bermudez, Rene Garcia, and Robert Gonzalez as co-sponsors. Mayor Bovo extended thanks to these commissioners and acknowledged the City Council of Hialeah for their endorsement from the beginning of this effort.
As preparations for an official unveiling event are underway, Bovo said he anticipates a visit from Trump for the ceremony, according to his statement.
