A Florida man was fatally shot while stopping to intervene in a fight along a road in Apopka earlier this week, not long after dropping his 10-year-old daughter off for her first day of school.
Daryl Hill, 56, was found lying on a sidewalk near the intersection of Plymouth Sorrento Road and West Ponkan Road just before 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, suffering from a suspected gunshot wound, according to an arrest affidavit viewed by NTD.
Deputies with the Orange County Sheriff's Office had initially been called to the scene after receiving a report of a man and woman fighting inside a vehicle that had crashed. While they were en route, deputies were notified that someone had been shot with a shotgun.
A witness told authorities that a white Chevrolet Silverado had collided with a black SUV, before a man—later identified as Raul Lionel Vazquez, 26—removed a woman from the pickup truck.
Officials said Vazquez and the woman continued fighting outside the vehicle as Hill tried to stop the altercation.
According to the affidavit, the witness then heard a gunshot and saw Vazquez holding a black shotgun, which he was allegedly seen placing in the back seat of the truck. Deputies later found the barrel and frame of the firearm protruding from the rear driver's side door of the Silverado, which was seized and towed pending a search warrant.
Hill was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 9:20 a.m.
Vazquez was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He appeared in court on Wednesday, where a judge denied bond.
Online court records reviewed by NTD show Vazquez was previously arrested in May 2024 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. In early 2025, he was released on bond after being charged with battery by strangulation, both third-degree felonies.
Vazquez's next court date is scheduled for Aug. 17. If convicted of second-degree murder, he could face a sentence of up to life in prison under Florida law. A representative for Vazquez could not immediately be reached for comment.
In addition to his 10-year-old daughter, Hill is survived by his wife of 17 years, Suzanne Hill, and two adult sons.
Speaking with Wesh 2 News on Tuesday night, his wife described him as a hero.
