The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall of a popular prepackaged Mexican meal sold nationwide at Target stores.

The potential presence of undeclared shrimp led One Frozen, LLC of Rochester, New York, to voluntarily recall certain lots of Good & Gather™ frozen Southwest-Style Burrito Bowl Blend, according to an FDA advisory.

“The recall is being initiated after three consumer complaints were received indicating the possible presence of shrimp in this product,” the FDA said.

The distribution from One Frozen to Target began on April 17.

There are nine major food allergens that the FDA requires all companies to identify in their products, which include milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame.

“Reactions due to an allergen can be severe and life-threatening at low levels of exposure,” Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys founder James Roswold told NTD. “Also, shrimp protein can be especially difficult to detect visually, which means testing and specialized cleaning will be needed.”

The recalled food item is sold in 12-ounce plastic bags with lot codes L5055-1, L5055-2, L5055-3, L5055-4, L5055-5, and L5055-6.

Some 57,240 consumer units were distributed; however, no illnesses have been reported as of yet.

Company leaders said in a statement that the affected product has been identified and quarantined to prevent further escalation and that no other products are involved in the recall.

“One Frozen can confirm that it was able to block half of the total quantity of the product at its own sites or in stores,” company corporate communications and public affairs leader Korneel Warlop told NTD. “This includes a substantial safety buffer. The other half was already present in the market and therefore subject to the recall. A root cause analysis has been conducted, and corrective actions are being implemented to prevent this from occurring in the future.”
Last month, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said at a Cabinet meeting that the FDA is ramping up inspections of imported shrimp to ensure that Americans are not eating radioactive seafood.

"The company should audit suppliers for allergen controls, test and verify the ingredients received, and conduct random inspections of the finished product for any undeclared allergens," Roswold added. "They should be thorough in their labeling and include may contain warnings if there is a potential for cross-contact."

The FDA urged consumers who purchased a recalled Good & Gather™ Southwest-Style Burrito Bowl Blend bag to not consume it and instead contact Target for a full refund.
