A recall of frozen dog food has been expanded over concerns the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious and potentially fatal illness in animals and humans.
Since the first advisory was issued, the FDA said it has received additional reports of pets becoming ill after consuming the recalled products.
The agency's notice states that Listeria monocytogenes is usually transmitted through the consumption of contaminated food, but people can also be exposed to the bacteria by touching contaminated food, utensils, or surfaces and failing to thoroughly wash their hands.
Pregnant women are usually more susceptible to infection, as are infants, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the illness, but may include vomiting, diarrhea, fever, muscle aches, headaches, and lethargy. However, pets that have been exposed to contaminated food can be infected without showing any symptoms and may still spread the bacteria through their feces and saliva.
Raaw Energy's latest recall features more than 60 varieties of frozen dog food packaged in 2- and 5-pound clear plastic tubes, including the chicken medley, turkey medley, duck, salmon, and pork flavors.
The products, which were sold in brown cardboard boxes containing 5 to 20 tubes, were distributed in nine states across the East Coast, including Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
In its announcement, Raaw Energy said it would temporarily stop all dog food production effective May 21 to better evaluate and address the problem.
"As part of this process, we will be resurfacing key areas to make them smoother, more sanitary, and easier to clean. All drains and sewer lines will be thoroughly cleaned and treated, and additional cleaning efforts will be made on the evaporators," the company said. "We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. As a small business, we are committed to doing the right thing and correct any issues."
Customers have been asked to immediately discard the products in a secure manner to reduce the risk of illness. Anyone who has questions about the recall can contact Raaw Energy directly at (732) 414-1446.
