Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is recovering from pneumonia and remains in critical but stable condition, according to an update from his spokesman Monday.
"On September 11th, Mayor Giuliani ran toward the towers to help those in need, which later led to a diagnosis of restrictive airway disease," Ted Goodman wrote in a statement on X. "This condition adds complications to any respiratory illness, and the virus quickly overwhelmed his body, requiring mechanical ventilation to maintain adequate oxygen and stabilize his condition."
He is now breathing on his own but remains hospitalized, Goodman added.
Giuliani, 81, was hospitalized on May 3, but the details of his condition were not disclosed at the time.
Giuliani served as mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001, during which he rose to prominence for his leadership during the Sept. 11 attacks.
This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
