Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is recovering from pneumonia and remains in critical but stable condition, according to an update from his spokesman Monday.

"On September 11th, Mayor Giuliani ran toward the towers to help those in need, which later led to a diagnosis of restrictive airway disease," Ted Goodman wrote in a statement on X. "This condition adds complications to any respiratory illness, and the virus quickly overwhelmed his body, requiring mechanical ventilation to maintain adequate oxygen and stabilize his condition."

He is now breathing on his own and remains hospitalized, Goodman added.

Giuliani’s family and primary medical provider are by the former mayor’s side, Goodman added. He said they thanked well-wishers for their love and support.

“Mayor Giuliani is the ultimate fighter—as he has demonstrated throughout his life—and he is winning this battle,” his spokesman added.
Giuliani, 81, was hospitalized on May 3, but the details of his condition were not disclosed at the time.

His hospitalization, near Palm Beach, Florida, came after he was heard coughing Friday on his nightly online talk show and pointed out his hoarse voice to viewers and admitted that he was “a little under the weather.”

Giuliani served as mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001. His tenure was marked by the Sept. 11 attack during which he rose to prominence for his leadership, ultimately being referred to as “America’s mayor.”

Giuliani also previously served as Trump’s personal attorney and adviser, leading legal efforts in the president’s claims of fraud in the 2020 election.

In response to his hospitalization, Trump called Giuliani “a True Warrior, and the Best Mayor in the History of New York City, BY FAR” in a post on Truth Social.

“What a tragedy that he was treated so badly by the Radical Left Lunatics, Democrats ALL — AND HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING!” Trump wrote Sunday. “They cheated on the Elections, fabricated hundreds of stories, did anything possible to destroy our Nation, and now, look at Rudy. So sad!”

Giuliani ran for president in 2007, followed by his post-9/11 boost in popularity, and started off strong as the front-runner for the Republican nomination. But he ultimately dropped his campaign after struggling in the primaries following concerns from the Republican party about his past support for abortion rights, gay rights, gun control, and speculation about his personal life and business connections to the Middle East.

Giuliani ran for the U.S. Senate in 2000 but left the race after he was diagnosed with cancer.
