A helicopter crashed into a building in the Manhattan borough of New York City on June 10, killing the pilot and prompting a huge response from emergency responders.

The Fire Department of New York said that firefighters were on the scene of the crash and later said that one fatality had been confirmed.

The helicopter crashed at 787 7th Avenue, the department said.

Nearby buildings were evacuated after the helicopter crashed, shaking the Manhattan high-rise.

Pictures and video footage showed a number of fire engines and police cars in the vicinity as well as smoke rising from the building.

The chopper appeared to have crashed on the roof of the high-rise building.

"There was a helicopter hard landing on the roof of 787 7th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Fire has been extinguished. Please continue to avoid the area," the New York Police Department stated.

The crash came as weather in the city appeared to be causing low visibility, with rain and a heavily overcast sky.

Weather data indicated that there was a low 600-foot ceiling with two-mile visibility, according to plane expert Jason Rabinowitz.

Initial reports incorrectly described the aircraft that crashed into the building as a plane.
