Independent journalist Nick Sortor was arrested on Thursday night for disorderly conduct during demonstrations in Portland.

Police confirmed Sortor, 27, was among three people arrested after officers responded to altercations outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building in the city.

The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) said in a statement officers initially responded to a fight that broke out around 8 p.m.

Sortor was arrested after officers returned to the scene a few hours later.

"PPB continued to monitor the situation and responded after seeing additional fights break out," PPB wrote in a statement. "At about 11:16 p.m., RRT moved in and arrested three people were arrested and all booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center (MCDC) on charges of Disorderly Conduct in the Second Degree."

At the time, demonstrations were being held in protest against President Donald Trump's sweeping immigration policies.

Trump said he had "no choice" but to send National Guard troops to protect the city and the ICE facility in Portland that was being targeted in the ongoing demonstrations.

“The Governor of Oregon must be living in a ‘Dream World,’” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. “Portland is a NEVER-ENDING DISASTER. Many people have been badly hurt, and even killed. It is run like a Third World Country.”
Sortor revealed on X that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is now investigating his arrest. Attorney General Pam Bondi told him that she has launched a "full investigation" of PPB following his "wrongful" arrest, according to Sortor.

PPB said in its statement that it will continue to monitor protest activity.

"While PPB's role is public safety and supporting constitutionally protected activity, part of our role is to address criminal acts," it wrote in a statement. " Officers may be seen in a larger group to make targeted arrests for specific crimes committed. PPB members may also investigate crimes and conduct follow-up investigations into criminal activity later and will forward cases to the Multnomah County District Attorney for prosecution when feasible."

PPB stressed that arrests don't necessarily lead to criminal charges.

"As a reminder, just because arrests are not made at the scene, when tensions are high, that does not mean that people are not being charged with crimes later," PPB stated.

Sortor confirmed the arrest on X, calling it a big "mistake."

"You PROVED what we’ve all been saying for years: you’re CORRUPT and CONTROLLED by violent Antifa thugs who terrorize the streets," Sortor said. "You thought arresting me would make me shut up and go away. You couldn’t have been more wrong. Stay tuned."

He also shared a video on social media showing him being handcuffed and taken away.

NTD reached out to Sortor but did not receive an immediate response.

As an independent journalist, Sortor has covered major stories across the nation, documenting his work on X and sharing information with his more than 1.2 million followers. Sortor has also reported for media outlets Fox News and NewsMax.

Along with Sortor, Angela Davis, 49, of Vernonia, Oregon, and Son Mi Yi, 43, of Portland, were also arrested on Thursday night.

All were booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Disorderly Conduct in the Second Degree.
