As fireworks burst overhead and colorful processions wound through the streets of central India this summer, thousands of students discovered an unexpected source of tranquility amid the festive chaos.
Between July and September, more than 4,500 young people and their teachers at 16 schools across the Nagpur region experienced Falun Dafa, an ancient Chinese meditation practice that blends slow, gentle movements with principles of truthfulness, compassion and forbearance.
The timing proved fortuitous. India's festival season—marked by Raksha Bandhan, Ganesh Chaturthi, Janmashtami, and Independence Day—typically brings joy and excitement, but also exhaustion and overstimulation. Educators across Nandanvan, Pauni, Kamptee, Mohpa, and neighboring communities seized the opportunity to offer their students something different: a chance to slow down and turn inward.
What unfolded surprised even veteran teachers accustomed to restless classrooms and distracted teenagers.
The sessions followed a simple format. Falun Dafa practitioners first explained the history and introduced the philosophy of Falun Dafa, then guided students and teachers through three of the practice's five exercises.
The response was immediate and overwhelmingly positive. Students described feeling lighter, more energized, and unexpectedly peaceful. Teachers noticed something they'd been struggling to achieve all year: genuine focus.
"The students showed great enthusiasm, which increased their excitement," said Pawanbhumi, a teacher at Janata High School. "While performing the exercises, their response was extremely positive. I sincerely hope that such sessions continue to be held in the future so that students, teachers, and parents can benefit from them."
At Central Provincial School, teacher Sushma Kanade watched her students settle into stillness with unusual ease. "The Falun Dafa meditation session was conducted, which turned out to be very enriching, helping students understand how mental and intellectual peace can be achieved," she said.
The practice seemed particularly well-suited to today's overstimulated generation, several educators noted. A teacher at Little Rose Convent called the session "wonderful," emphasizing its value for students and staff struggling to maintain concentration during stressful periods.
"Through this Falun Dafa exercise demonstration, we witnessed how these gentle yet powerful exercises can help calm the mind, reduce stress, and enhance focus," she said.
For many students, the experience went beyond simple relaxation. They spoke of transformation, however brief, in surprisingly mature language.
Shreyas Tiwari, an eighth-grader, described a physical sensation unlike anything he'd felt before. "My whole body felt light, and the blood seemed to flow freely," he said. "Falun Dafa is truly amazing—it refreshes both the body and the mind."
Dimple Wankhede, a student at New English High School, used even more poetic terms to capture her experience. "Falun Dafa, based on Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance, gave me such a beautiful feeling of calmness," she said. "After practicing, I felt a wave of positive energy and inner strength. It was one of the most peaceful experiences I've ever had."
Vishwajeet Sawai, a 12th-grader at New English School and Junior College, saw broader implications in what he'd learned. "The exercises made me feel balanced, focused, and filled with vitality," he said. "I think every student should experience this—it strengthens not only the body but also the heart."
The sessions included a sobering element that resonated deeply with many young participants. The Falun Dafa practitioners explained that while Falun Dafa is practiced freely around the world, the Chinese Communist Party has brutally persecuted adherents in China for more than two decades.
The revelation moved students to action. Many signed petitions calling for an end to the suppression.
Shilpa Panjhad, a sixth-grader from Saraswati Convent, said the injustice troubled her conscience. "When I learned how practitioners in China are treated unfairly, I felt sad and wanted to stand for what's right," she said. "Falun Dafa teaches us to stay kind and strong, no matter what happens. Signing the petition is important to support Falun Dafa practitioners and spread awareness about what they are facing."
The impact didn't go unnoticed by school administrators. Two institutions—New English High School and Junior College, and Pratibha Higher Primary and Secondary School—formally presented Certificates of Appreciation to thank the Falun Dafa practitioners for sharing the practice on Aug. 12.
The certificates praised the sessions for delivering "mental clarity, inner calm, and physical well-being" to hundreds of participants. At New English High School, approximately 650 students from grades 10 through 12 took part, while Pratibha School saw around 200 students from grades 5 through 10 participate.
Both schools said they hope that the practitioners would return, recognizing that a single session merely scratched the surface of what the practice might offer their students.
