CBS "Evening News" anchor Jeff Glor has been removed from his post amid a reshuffle at the network.
Norah O'Donnell will be promoted to the position and the program featuring her as anchor will debut this summer in New York before moving to its permanent home in Washington this fall, CBS said in a press release.
O'Donnell will also serve as the managing editor of "Evening News" and be the lead anchor for political coverage for the primaries and election nights in 2020.
“Norah is one of the leading journalists of our time. Her outstanding reporting, incisive interviews, and dedication to the truth will distinguish the CBS Evening News every night,” CBS News President and Senior Executive Producer Susan Zirinsky said in a statement.
Another big move came as Gayle King, Anthony Mason, and Tony Dokoupil were announced as the new co-hosts of "CBS This Morning," with the new program featuring the trio to debut on May 20. King is a holdover while Mason and Dokoupil will replace John Dickerson and O'Donnell.
Dickerson was named as a "60 Minutes" correspondent and a contributor to the network's election coverage. O'Donnell will also continue as a contributing correspondent for "60 Minutes."
“This is a start of a new era for CBS News,” Zirinsky said. “Our job is to reveal America to itself through original reporting, strong investigative journalism, and powerful political coverage.”
She also praised King, Mason, Dokoupil, and Dickerson.
"Gayle’s game-changing interviews, compassionate storytelling, and authenticity make her one of a kind. Her unrivaled ability to connect with audiences makes CBS This Morning relevant, relatable, and the place you must start your day,” said Zirinsky.
“Anthony Mason is an exceptional journalist who over his three decades at CBS News has interviewed everyone from presidents to legendary artists, and has tapped into some of the most important stories in the world," she added. "Tony Dokoupil is a brilliant writer with a passion for delivering stories that matter. John is a world-class interviewer and writer who uses history to create current context to the complexities of the day."
It wasn't clear what position Glor, the current anchor for "Evening News," would shift into. Glor replaced Scott Pelley as the anchor for the program in mid-2017.
“We are grateful to Jeff Glor for his award-winning work and his commitment to both his colleagues and to our viewers. As we transition the Evening News to Washington, we are discussing opportunities for Jeff to remain with CBS News and continue providing the same substantive, trusted reporting that he has been offering for the past 12 years,” Zirinsky said.
The changes were discussed on Monday morning during "CBS This Morning" by King and O'Donnell.
“It’s incredibly humbling to accept this position ... I’m going to give this everything I’ve got,” O’Donnell said after King announced the move. She's the third woman to anchor an evening newscast at a major network, after former "Evening News" anchor Katie Couric and "PBS NewsHour" anchor Judy Woodruff.
King said that whether Glor continued working for CBS would be his choice.
According to pictures from Glor's Instagram and Twitter accounts, he was covering a story at the Grand Canyon for the national park's 100th anniversary and spent some time with family there.
