The first husband of former first lady Jill Biden has been charged with murdering his current wife, according to authorities on Tuesday.

Williamson Stevenson, 77, was indicted by a grand jury on first-degree murder, according to a news release by the New Castle County Police Department in Delaware.

Police said Stevenson was taken into custody at his residence following the indictment.

Linda Stevenson, 64, was found unresponsive late December in the living room of their Delaware home in the 1300 block of Idlewood Road in the community of Oak Hill.

Police had responded to a report of a domestic dispute at the residence, according to a December 2025 press release on the incident. Officers attempted to revive her by performing life-saving measures but she was later pronounced dead.

The Delaware Attorney General's office has confirmed that Stevenson is the ex-husband of Jill Biden. They were married from 1970 to 1975.  Jill Biden has declined to comment on the case.

In the 1980s, Stevenson founded a popular music venue called the Stone Balloon in Newark.

Jill Biden married Sen. Joe Biden in 1977. After he won the election, she later became First Lady from January 2021 to January 2025.

The cause of Linda Stevenson’s death has not been revealed.

Her obituary does not mention her husband.

“Linda was preceded in death by her beloved parents Charles and Bernice Barnes. She is survived by her daughter, Christina (Jeremy); her granddaughter, Ciara (Madison and Logan); her sister Cathy (Tom) Lancaster, nephew Jason and extended relatives,” it reads.

Linda Stevenson ran a bookkeeping business and enjoyed family time and cheering on the  Philadelphia Eagles. She was tenacious, kind-hearted, and “fiercely loyal,” the obituary states.

Stevenson is being held at the Howard Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $500,000 cash bail. It's unclear whether he has retained legal representation.
