Californians got surprised just after midnight on Wednesday after a magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck underneath South Los Angeles, causing light tremors.

A magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck south Los Angeles just after midnight on Wednesday, causing light tremors.

Warning system LA Quakebot posted to Twitter that the quake hit the View Park-Windsor Hills area in Los Angeles and had a depth of 7.4 miles.

The quake caused light tremors throughout Southern California that were felt by many and were strong enough to rattle dishes and windows.

The earthquake scared residents and quickly became a trending topic on social media, Deadline reported.

American model, television personality, and author Chrissy Teigen wrote on Twitter in full caps, "EARTHQUAKE."

"I am way to used to earthquakes. think I've been through 100 over 3s, all the way up to 6.5 I think," Teigen wrote on Twitter. "I can't even imagine anything rougher than the Bali one. But the scale does go higher."

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti wrote on Twitter that the Los Angeles Fire Department was informed and would carry out a "routine survey of the city to assess for any damages."

"The Newport-Inglewood fault, which runs from the Westside of Los Angeles to the Orange County coast, has long been considered one of Southern California’s top seismic danger zones because it runs under some of the region’s most densely populated areas," The Associated Press reported.

In the last 10 days, two earthquakes of a magnitude of 3.0 or greater were centered near last night's.
