Analysts say seizing the island, Iran’s largest in the Gulf, could weaken Iran’s ability to disrupt maritime traffic, though such an objective would be challenging with the current force buildup. An explosion rocked a port facility on the Iranian territorial island of Qeshm, and Iranian forces traded fire with unspecified enemy forces on May 7, Iran's state-run PressTV reported.

PressTV reported the blast impacted the Bahman Pier during an exchange of fire on Thursday.

Qeshm is Iran’s largest territorial island and sits in the Strait of Hormuz. The strait acts as a narrow chokepoint for vessels sailing between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

Following the initial report of a fire near the Bahman Pier, the state-run Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) radio agency reported that a U.S. military operation targeted an Iranian tanker operating in the Strait of Hormuz. IRIB reported that Iranian forces responded by firing missiles at the U.S. forces.

The Pentagon and U.S. Central Command did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the reported incidents.

U.S. forces have been enforcing a blockade of Iranian ports and trade since April 13. In a few instances, those U.S. forces have utilized disabling fire and boarding operations to stop vessels from bypassing the blockade.

On May 6, Central Command announced a U.S. Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet was launched from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and fired its 20 mm cannon to disable the rudder of an unladen Iranian crude oil tanker sailing through the Gulf of Oman toward an Iranian port.
