Police said the boy is still receiving care at Addenbrooke’s Hospital following the incident at Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo in Huntingdonshire.
The suspect is described as a man from Norfolk. He was released on bail until Sept. 18 as detectives continue to investigate the circumstances of the case.
“The man, who is not known to the victim, was assessed as not being fit for interview,” said the police statement on June 19.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of June 18 when officers were called to the zoo at 1:24 p.m. by ambulance services.
According to police, the boy suffered serious injuries after ending up inside a crocodile enclosure. Zoo staff pulled him from the enclosure and provided medical care before he was transported to the hospital.
Detective Inspector Verity McCann said investigators are continuing to gather evidence.
She said their inquiries “are ongoing as we continue to understand the circumstances surrounding this distressing incident.”
“Our thoughts remain with the boy, and his family and specialist officers continue to support them through this difficult time,” McCann said.
In an earlier statement issued June 18, police said officers were interviewing people who were at the zoo when the incident occurred.
“At this stage, we are speaking to people who were at the zoo at the time of this distressing incident to understand more about the circumstances,” McCann said on June 18.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family following the incident that occurred today," the zoo said in a public statement on June 18.
The zoo directed questions about the incident to Cambridgeshire police and said the remainder of the attraction would continue to operate as normal.
