State health officials on Monday reported that two Michigan residents have died from complications tied to the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak, marking the first fatalities in the country connected to the microscopic intestinal parasite.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said both patients suffered from serious pre-existing medical conditions that likely worsened due to the illness and resulting dehydration. Officials declined to release further details about the individuals, stating no additional information will be provided on these two cases.

Outbreak Numbers Climb Statewide

Michigan's case total has reached 11,234 since the outbreak began, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The agency reported that 193 of those cases required hospitalization as of July 30, 2026. State officials noted that these figures are refreshed daily on weekdays through late morning, while hospitalization details and broader outbreak statistics get updated weekly on Thursdays.
Investigators have not pinned down a definitive source for the Michigan cases. Evidence so far points to lettuce or salad greens as a possible culprit, though no particular producer, grower or distributor has been named, and other food sources have not been eliminated from consideration.

A Parasite That Rarely Kills

Cyclosporiasis stems from a tiny, heat-tolerant parasite that lives in the intestines and spreads through fecal contamination, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The infection typically triggers watery diarrhea "with frequent and sometimes explosive bowel movements.” Historically, outbreaks have been traced to produce irrigated with water tainted by feces.
Fatal cases are uncommon. The CDC describes the disease as rarely deadly, and Michigan's health department similarly notes that cyclosporiasis is generally not life-threatening, adding that death from the illness is uncommon in the United States.

National Surge Dwarfs Past Outbreaks

This year's nationwide outbreak has vastly outpaced historical patterns. The CDC said it has tallied more than 18,000 confirmed or suspected infections during the current surge, though state-level reporting suggests the real total tops 20,000. That surpasses the previous record of roughly 4,700 cases set in 2019, which had itself marked a notable jump after years of relatively rare reports.

Federal investigators have connected part of the surge to lettuce imported from Mexico and served at Taco Bell restaurants across nine states. As of late July, that supply chain link accounted for 1,947 illnesses and at least 98 hospitalizations nationally. The CDC cautioned that additional restaurants, retailers, distributors or brands could still surface as contributors to the outbreak as its investigation continues.

Health officials said that cyclosporiasis remains less prevalent than other foodborne illnesses like salmonella and E. coli, and many infections are never traced back to a specific source. Outbreaks tend to peak during late spring and summer months, when warmer conditions favor the parasite's spread.

Michigan officials said they continue coordinating with local health departments and other partners to track new cases and will issue updates as the investigation develops. National surveillance data on cyclosporiasis cases is also tracked separately through the CDC's monitoring system.
