The U.S. FDA announced this week that 66 containers of mislabeled Red Potato Bliss Salad sold at Stop & Shop stores in five states are under recall due to allergy concerns.

Undeclared wheat is what led Hans Kissle of Haverhill, Massachusetts, to voluntarily withdraw the product, according to an Aug. 5 FDA advisory.

“The recall was initiated after it was discovered that 66 containers of Tricolor Twist Pasta Salad were mislabeled with the incorrect top label,” the FDA said.

The mislabeled containers were distributed to Stop & Shop retail locations in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York, and the FDA fears they have the potential to still be in consumers’ refrigerators.

Hans Kissle company leaders did not respond to requests for comment by the time this report was published.

“While the front label correctly identifies the product, the top label misrepresents it as Red Bliss Potato Salad,” the FDA said. “The actual product contains wheat, which is not declared on the top label.”

There are nine major food allergens that the FDA requires all companies to identify in their products. They include milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame.

The potato and pasta salad in question are packaged in 16-ounce, clear plastic containers bearing a white lid that is stamped with UPC Code 036217673706. The expiration date, Aug. 20, can be found on the top lid.

The clear container is labeled as Hans Kissle Tri Color Twist Pasta Salad and the top label declares the product as Hans Kissle Red Bliss Potato Salad.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the FDA said.

No illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported in connection with the recall so far, according to the FDA.

The FDA urged consumers who purchased the recalled product to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Stop & Shop company leaders did not respond to requests for comment by the time this report was published.

Dave Bloom, CEO of SnackSafely.com, advises never relying on a food label for the ingredients due to relaxed allergen labeling requirements.

"Mislabeled allergen recalls happen all the time," Bloom told NTD. "The wrong packaging was loaded at manufacturing time, a manufacturing line was not sanitized thoroughly, or the wrong ingredient was loaded during manufacturing."
