A 23-year-old model competing in Miss Universe Tegucigalpa 2026 was discovered dead inside her Tegucigalpa apartment on Monday, according to the Brazilian outlet O Globo, which cited local authorities.
Forensic officials sealed off Aquino's apartment in the Altos del Trapiche residential area to gather evidence. An autopsy is underway, and the exact cause of death has not yet been determined.
Aquino was studying international marketing and social services at the National Autonomous University of Honduras while pursuing modeling. She was regarded as a rising figure in the pageant world, and frequently posted travel photos on social media.
"Honestly, this is something that has deeply affected all of us, as it happened so unexpectedly," the organization wrote. "Wualys was a woman who not only shined herself, but also helped her fellow contestants shine. She showed us that she was always willing to help and never said no when it came to supporting others."
The post added, "This is news that moves us in an indescribable way, and all we can do is be grateful for having had her presence in this pageant, because she truly made a difference. May God have her in His blessed glory."
According to O Globo, Aquino's second-place finish came in the regional pageant that precedes the national Miss Universe Honduras competition.
Commenters flooded her social media accounts with tributes following news of her death.
Another commenter wrote simply, "Rest in peace Queen 🕊," while a third wrote, "💔 💔 💔 💔 I will always remember your smile, I promise 🤍.”
