The search for a missing 7-year-old boy with autism has ended after the child was found dead in a pool at a residence in Menands, New York, just days after he disappeared in the area, authorities said.
Harbe was last seen nearby around 4:10 p.m. on Sunday and was reported missing shortly before 4:30 p.m.
The child, who was nonverbal, had previously visited the neighborhood, which is bordered by the Sage Estates Preserve, a 65-acre wooded recreation area. Officials said the boy was known to explore and wander off and had a strong interest in water, climbing, and the outdoors.
"There is no indication that anyone else was involved in Harbe's disappearance," officials said. "Still, all possibilities are currently being investigated."
Authorities reviewed surveillance footage and deployed helicopters, drones, and K-9 teams throughout the area in an effort to locate the child's whereabouts. Officials also stationed ice cream trucks in the neighborhood in the hopes the familiar music would help draw him out if he was hiding and urged local residents to repeatedly check their properties, including their backyards, pools, and outbuildings.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the boy's death remains ongoing with assistance from the New York State Police, the Albany County Sheriff's Office, and the FBI's Albany Field Office. Officials said Park Drive between Wards Lane and Mountain View would remain closed as the investigation continues, noting that residents should avoid the area until further notice.
No additional information was provided about how Harbe may have ended up in the pool or how long was there prior to being discovered. Schwebke told reporters Tuesday that officials would have more information once an autopsy is conducted.
"We just want to express our condolences and appreciation for everybody that came out and helped in the search efforts," Schwebke said. "Obviously we're very saddened by the results."
