NFL analyst Tony Romo has been placed on leave from CBS Sports following his arrest last week on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence in Wisconsin.
According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, Romo was taken into custody after the stop, booked, and later released. Court records show he was cited for refusing to submit to a test for intoxication after his arrest. Romo is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 21.
Citations released by the sheriff’s office state deputies found an open bottle of an alcoholic beverage in the passenger area of Romo’s black Jeep during an inventory search before the vehicle was towed.
Body camera footage released after the arrest showed deputies telling Romo they suspected impairment after observing red, glassy eyes and detecting the odor of alcohol. Romo told deputies he had come from a golf course. According to arrest records, Romo was cooperative during the encounter.
Following Romo’s leave, CBS Sports announced that former NFL defensive end JJ Watt will fill his role on the network’s lead NFL broadcast team alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and reporter Tracy Wolfson.
Watt joined CBS Sports in 2023 as an analyst on “The NFL Today” before becoming part of the network’s No. 2 NFL game broadcast team last season.
Romo was not scheduled to return to CBS’ NFL coverage until the regular season opener on Sept. 13. CBS will air a preseason matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 28 and is expected to announce its early-season broadcast assignments in the coming weeks.
After retiring from football, Romo joined CBS Sports in 2017 and became the network’s lead NFL game analyst. Working alongside Nantz, Romo has called some of the league’s biggest games, including conference championship matchups and Super Bowls.
