Ryan Walters, CEO of Teacher Freedom Alliance and former Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction, spoke with NTD's Jack Bradley on Norway's plummeting literacy rate after the country gave iPads to 5-year-old children when they started school.

Walters discussed how digital learning harmed students during the COVID pandemic, and how books in children's hands and writing with paper and pencil improve literacy—and are common sense.

Walters said digital textbooks and digital note-taking are harming American students, and the emphasis should be on how to maximize student learning.

He said the United States has over-emphasized technology, adding that the government is always wrong and the parents are always right in making decisions for their children.

He called for putting parents first in a child's education. Walters said it is essential to limit screen time in schools, and students should be learning from great teachers.

Walters called for using a free market approach to education, implementing merit pay for teachers, pushing for parents' rights, and expanding school choice.
