First Lady Melania Trump appeared on Capitol Hill on Wednesday to push for reforms aimed at improving outcomes for children aging out of the foster care system.

“In safeguarding our children’s well-being, we shape the integrity of our nation,” she said. “But to get there, a strong knowledge base is required. Education is the cornerstone of a child’s future.”

The first lady called the effort a “moral imperative,” and backed a bipartisan package of six bills under her ‘Fostering the Future’ initiative. The proposals would modernize the Chafee foster care program, expanding job training and financial literacy support. They would also strengthen tracking of housing and education outcomes for foster youth.

Mrs. Trump said that too few young people are leaving the system and completing college, citing figures of roughly 3 percent. She urged lawmakers to close that gap through expanded support.
